What is NTI?

Yes. Nevada Thyroid Institute has nearly 2 decades of experience with thyroid biopsy and years of expertise with thyroid ultrasound.

Why should I seek care for my thyroid at NTI?

How long must I wait after surgery to have radioactive iodine therapy?

You will need to consult with the endocrinologist before radioiodine therapy. We usually recommend 2-3 weeks of low iodine diet. Additional time may be needed depending on whether you are being treated with Thyrogen before radioiodine therapy or simply stopping thyroid hormone.

Should I continue thyroid hormone if I become pregnant?

Yes. You should see the endocrinologist for testing and counseling as soon as you become pregnant.

How long does it take to become hypothyroid after taking radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism?

In most cases, patients become hypothyroid in 1-3 months and will need to start thyroid hormone therapy.

How long will it take for me to notice a difference in how I feel after my thyroid hormone dose is changed?

It usually takes several weeks to start feeling better; it takes 5-6 weeks for thyroid hormone levels to reach a steady state after a change is made.

How long prior to my visit should my blood be drawn?

TSH, Free T4 may be completed in 24-48 hours depending on the lab. Thyroid antibodies and thyroglobulin may take up to a week. we usually recommend having blood drawn 1 week prior to your visit.

What causes thyroid disease?

Exact causes have not yet been determined. We do know that it is familial and often precipitated by stress. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid.

What is the best diet for a thyroid patient?

No specific diet has been shown to be superior for patients with thyroid disease. Eat a healthy diet.
